Teign Estuary Transition

2013: Earth Hour, Saturday 23rd March 8.30-9.30 pm

Teign Estuary Transition are holding a “star party” at Helen and Phil’s on Saturday evening for TET members. Tom Rickard will tell a star-themed story, and (if there’s no cloud!) Phil will give a short guided tour of the night sky for beginners.

This is our way of celebrating Earth Hour, which is an annual global event when people across the world turn off lights for one hour between 8.30 – 9.30 pm to celebrate the planet together and raise awareness of climate change. If you’re interested in becoming a member, email us at info@teigntransition.org.uk, or you could switch off your own lights and comment your ideas to this post. See the Earth Hour web site below for ideas.

The Transition Group is taking this opportunity to ask the Council about plans to switch off selected sections of Teignmouth’s street-lighting at night, to save money, save energy and cut down on light pollution.

Oystercatcher Cafe, Wednesday 6th March at 7.30pm

As part of Climate Week, 4-10th March, Teign Estuary Transition have arranged for Andy Case, of Case Environmental, to tell us everything we need to know (well almost!) about our drinking water. In particular, he will be talking about how energy intensive the production of drinking water is.

Some of you will know Andy from his invaluable work in helping to supply the Walled Garden at Eastcliff Park with its water. He specialises in private water supplies, water testing and related environmental issues and is a mine of information on all things water-related! So please come along to the Oystercatcher Cafe on Wednesday 6th March at 7.30pm for a fascinating talk.

Climate Week: Bubble & Squeak at the Oystercatcher: Sat 9th/Sun 10th March

cw-logoJan Childs, the Oystercatcher’s new owner, was delighted to support Climate Week this year. Her husband Steve’s famous “Bubble and Squeak for Climate Week” will be the menu special on the weekend of 9th/10th March.

Sourdough talk: Thurs March 7th, 8pm

cw-logoAs part of Climate Week, Karen will talk on the benefits of Sourdough bread and grains in general. There will be samples to taste and Karen will kindly leave samples for us to cook and enjoy the following day.

The evening is free but we do ask for donations to cover costs.

The event will take place at Fran’s house but numbers are limited so please ring 770318 to reserve your place.

sourdough bread

What is sourdough?

Under analysis, sourdough is a polyculture of different yeasts and bacteria which will vary according to the location. Both the yeasts and bacteria contribute to the leavening process.

The yeasts are “wild” in that they are not the commercial yeast usually used to leaven bread. Again, these can vary according to location and rather than being a single species as with regular yeast, are usually 2 or 3 dominant strains, although there can be more yeasts which aren’t really involved with the aeration but are significant nutritionally, such as the torula yeasts.

Nutrition

Sourdough is important nutritionally because through the various types of fermentation, nutrients are released from the grain and new ones are also created. Sourdough bread is actually more nutritious than the grain from which it is made, so it is an important food.

Seed Swap at the TAAG Centre, Sat 9th,10am – 1pm

There will be a talk on how to save seeds and why it is important followed by the Seed Swap. cw-logo

Everyone is invited, whether you have seeds to share or not. The hope is that if you take seeds away this year, you will come back next year, having saved a few seeds yourself. If you have saved seed, please write the variety (if possible) and year on a packet. You can also bring seeds in commercial packets that you have not used, providing they are less than 3 years old.

Seeds supplied by Tucker Seeds, Ashburton.
