No garden does not mean no gardening!

I have no garden, no allotment, yet have found the room for a few small vegetable beds. How? Not magic, no, more a case of having an idea and mentioning it to someone, who mentioned it to somebody else…

Through a contact at TET’s Community Garden in Eastcliff Park, I discovered that a family a few streets from my home has a garden with an unused vegetable plot. I needed a plot, they had a free one. The answer was obvious: a garden share.

I met the family towards the end of the summer and we agreed how the garden share would work. I was to cultivate the vegetable plot, currently set out as four small beds, and as ‘payment’ for the use of the land, provide the family with a share of the produce.

With a good harvest I hope to be able to provide winter leeks, onion in the early summer, and a range of spring and summer crops next year.

The arrangement seems to work for everybody: I get some space for vegetables, the plot is kept in shape and the family receive part of the crop.

2012: Sunday 18th Nov – potato party in the park

Local residents and visitors were welcomed to Eastcliff Park’s walled garden to celebrate the autumn harvest of potatoes. The sun shone and everyone enjoyed looking around the garden, admiring progress made over the year. It was a chance for members of the gardening-sub group to share tips for permaculture gardening, and then everyone was invited to share home-made soup cooked on a brick stove and potatoes baked in a small fire.
Surplus uncooked potatoes were sold – money raised will help to buy seeds to grow in the garden next year.

The garden group will be holding a SEED SWAP in February. Please do gather your seeds on a dry day.

Last evening at the Walled Garden for 2012?

All October it’s been getting too dark far too early in the garden – there’s barely time to get a cup of tea organised before it’s time to go home. And as you can see, the garden is very damp, and our poor wall is still in pieces.

An October evening in the Walled Garden

There is plenty of life, though – Please come and see us on Sunday mornings – between 11 and 1 – ish – and admire the pond and the plants, the shelter, and the preparations for Spring – It won’t be long!

Den book-sale update

We are pleased to announce that our garden book sale raised £42.50 in cash together with various donations of garden tools. Thank you to all who contributed to the cause!

We would also like to say thank you to Tibbs the greengrocers who donated the prize for our raffle, which was won by Gillian Campbell; to Flo who contributed the fine gazebo you can see in the pictures of the event; to Tom whose idea it was and for helping to organise the event; and to Fran and Liz for all their work on the day.

Your Garden Needs…

It’s been two years since we bought tools for everyone to use at the Community Garden, and some of the forks and spades are beginning to show the strain of keeping up with us.

(These pictures were taken late in the day, but you get the idea.)

The sun shone, people came to see us, they brought books, looked at books, and bought books, and they all went away with Teign Estuary Transition contact details, so as well as a great fund raising event, it was a chance to talk transition. A big thank you to all our helpers and supporters for making this event so successful for us.

And if any of you have gardening tools in need of hard work and appreciation, you know where to find us!
