“Eat for Devon”: inviting people to join us

I work at Torbay Hospital, and have invited some colleagues to join me in this experiment. Please are you able to encourage friends and relatives, colleagues, or people in clubs/societies etc. to “eat for Devon”? It would be great to let us know of groups who have been invited to join us, so please ‘leave a comment’.

“Eat for Devon”: preparation for our local food challenge

Our challenge starts on Saturday 21st August, so I’m starting to think about shopping and menus for the coming week.

Some staple items may be tricky? Has anyone found a source of Devon-produced milk, bread, cereals? Please click on ‘leave a comment’ to share ideas.

I’ve started asking some local shops if they will help explain where the food they sell is sourced. Interested ones based in Teignmouth so far include:
Redfern’s Butchers, Lloyd Maunder Butchers, Ruffles Delicatessen, Nutters, Poppadums, the Great Catch fish shop, Tibbs Greengrocers, the Home Made Bakery, the Owl and the Pussycat, Cubby Hole newsagents and the Co-op.
Please talk to your local suppliers and if they are willing to help, add them by clicking on ‘leave a comment’.

You can also download a copy of the Eat for Devon poster. Perhaps you could display one in your window?

“Eat for Devon”: local food challenge

Can you meet the challenge to eat only locally produced food for one week?

Teign Estuary Transition is keen to experiment with whether it’s possible to eat only food produced or sourced within Devon and we’d like to encourage you to try this for a week.

Quite possibly it may just demonstrate how difficult  and expensive this might currently be.  But the Transition movement is about transitioning to a local economy to cope with the challenges posed by Peak Oil, so we thought it would be fun to try this out now!

We’re starting on Saturday 21st August to coincide with the Teignmouth Local Produce Market and will be offering tips on the blog  and inviting you to add your  comments and ideas, so watch this space!

Eastcliff Big Lunch update

Don’t forget the Eastcliff Big Lunch on Sunday 18th July in Teignmouth’s Eastcliff Park from 12 noon onwards, meeting at the new log picnic circle.

Please bring a picnic and come along to meet people and find out more about this beautiful community space. Lots of free events for children and adults are being planned.

  • Sian Avon, Senior Countryside Ranger for Teignbridge District Council, will lead a wildlife safari looking at the minibeasts who live in the park
  • there’ll be a scavenger hunt for children
  • a trail looking at the park’s history
  • a local food quiz.

Other activities are also being arranged.

The event is part of The Big Lunch run by the Eden Project and is being organised locally by the Friends of Eastcliff Park and Teign Estuary Transition working together with Teignbridge District Council.

To encourage sustainability, the Transition group invites you to see if you can bring locally produced food for your picnic, and also if possible to travel to the park by foot or public transport.

See you there!

Summary of ‘Food Group’ meeting

On Monday 24 May we welcomed some new members, identified lots of ideas and actions, and also took the opportunity to recommend names of favourite local suppliers to each other. Discussions ranged from farmers markets, pros and cons of car-parking, harvesting local mussels, how to define ‘local’, promoting seasonal vegetables e.g. in greengrocers and the Co-op, gardeners’ problems with slugs and snails, possible ways forward with the garden-share scheme, the importance of including children, and the Teign Estuary Transition’s summer picnic. We had a busy and enjoyable evening – and hope to meet more of you at the next Food Group meeting on 30 June.
