“Eat for Devon”: local food challenge

Can you meet the challenge to eat only locally produced food for one week?

Teign Estuary Transition is keen to experiment with whether it’s possible to eat only food produced or sourced within Devon and we’d like to encourage you to try this for a week.

Quite possibly it may just demonstrate how difficult  and expensive this might currently be.  But the Transition movement is about transitioning to a local economy to cope with the challenges posed by Peak Oil, so we thought it would be fun to try this out now!

We’re starting on Saturday 21st August to coincide with the Teignmouth Local Produce Market and will be offering tips on the blog  and inviting you to add your  comments and ideas, so watch this space!

Eastcliff Big Lunch update

Don’t forget the Eastcliff Big Lunch on Sunday 18th July in Teignmouth’s Eastcliff Park from 12 noon onwards, meeting at the new log picnic circle.

Please bring a picnic and come along to meet people and find out more about this beautiful community space. Lots of free events for children and adults are being planned.

  • Sian Avon, Senior Countryside Ranger for Teignbridge District Council, will lead a wildlife safari looking at the minibeasts who live in the park
  • there’ll be a scavenger hunt for children
  • a trail looking at the park’s history
  • a local food quiz.

Other activities are also being arranged.

The event is part of The Big Lunch run by the Eden Project and is being organised locally by the Friends of Eastcliff Park and Teign Estuary Transition working together with Teignbridge District Council.

To encourage sustainability, the Transition group invites you to see if you can bring locally produced food for your picnic, and also if possible to travel to the park by foot or public transport.

See you there!

More evidence for ‘Peak Oil’

The UK’s former chief scientific adviser, Sir David King, has said that as global oil demand starts to outstrip supply, oil companies will be forced to drill in unconventional places. This, in turn, might create great environmental, social and technological challenges.

TET Open House day

To those that turned out to enjoy the Open House sunshine last Sunday – thank you. To those that couldn’t make it – perhaps next year…
The transition chat included powering Devon, co-operation with similar organisations, and when it really would be best to pinch out our tomatoes. That really is local food.
Come along to the Core Group meeting on Tuesday (8th June), upstairs at the South Pacific at 7.30 pm, if you can – all members are welcome to attend. We begin with a short ‘transition training’ session.
See you there,
Mike

Teign Estuary Transition ‘Food Group’ Meeting

Teign Estuary Transition ‘Food Group’ Meeting: 7.30pm Monday 24th May,
at the South Pacific, Regent Street, Teignmouth.

If you are interested in local food we hope you will join us on the 24th May
to discuss how we can support and increase local food production and
distribution among the communities of the Teign Estuary.

The Teign Estuary Transition Group are actively looking for land for
community use and are initiating a garden share scheme.  Ideas around both
these initiatives will be shared on the 24th May and your input would be
very welcome.  If you already produce local food for private use or for
distribution, we would love to hear what you are doing. If you are
interested in supporting new initiatives in this area or want help to
develop some ideas of your own, we would also love to meet you.  If you just
enjoy eating local food – come and tell us about it.  Whatever your interest
in food – we look forward to meeting you.
