Review of potato party, Sunday 16th October

with one comment

The sun shone as about 80 friends, neighbours, local residents and members of Teign Estuary Transition met to eat the first crop of potatoes, grown within Eastcliff Park’s walled garden.

The abundant crop of delicious red-skinned Sarpo potatoes were baked on a huge bonfire; Sian Avon, Senior Countryside Ranger for Teignbridge District Council, supported the event throughout the day and provided wood for burning.

The main event started at 3pm, with David Haines conducting Teignmouth Community Choir singing environmental-themed songs to celebrate the garden and its harvest, before everyone enjoyed the feast of free potatoes and salads, also grown in the garden. Surplus uncooked potatoes were sold – money raised will help to buy seeds to grow in the garden next year.

We are grateful to the local press for publicising this event so effectively. It was promoted beforehand in Herald Express and Teignmouth Post. The Teignmouth Post also printed a two-page picture-feature reviewing the day (see p 20/21, Friday 21st October 2011).

Energyshare: full application submitted

leave a comment »

The full application to Energyshare for funding was submitted before the deadline of 5pm Friday 30th September.

Thanks to:
• David Onslow for all the time he gave freely for visiting sites, assessing requirements, and getting details back to me so promptly
• Staff from Alice Cross, Meadow Centre and TAAG for providing supporting information about their users and visitors, to create rich details for the bid
• Phil for his IT input with the Energyshare website, successfully resulting in us becoming their “featured group” on the actual closing date.

It was a lot of work which will hopefully benefit a lot of people right across our community. The outcomes of this round of bidding will be announced before the end of December.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far,
Helen

Friends, neighbours and local residents are invited to join Teign Estuary Transition in sharing their first crop of potatoes, which will be baked by bonfire within Eastcliff Park’s Walled Garden on Sunday 16th October.

Potatoes will be dug up and the bonfire prepared between 11am – 1pm. The main event starts at 3pm, with Teignmouth Community Choir singing to celebrate the harvest.

There is also a Compost Competition at 4pm, where you can bring along a sample of your own compost for analysis and feedback.

Entry to the event is free, though donations are welcome, and you can buy potatoes and home-made chutney to provide funds for next year’s crop.

leave a comment »

About fifty members and friends of Teign Estuary Transition Group gathered in the TAAG’s Arts & Community Centre in Teignmouth on Saturday evening to celebrate achievements of the Group’s first two years, hear about what the Group is currently doing, and help to form plans for the Group’s future. The evening provided the chance to watch a short animated environmental film called “Carbon Weevils”, along with socialising, live music by The Kirkwood Brown Trio, and supper. The evening also included a brief AGM.

The photos below, by Sally Fransen, show members of the Group enjoying the evening.

July 2011: Energyshare bid – success with first round!

leave a comment »

Thank you very much for supporting Teign Estuary Transition’s bid for funding. I’m delighted to say that this week I heard we’ve got through the first round. We came 45th out of 936 groups nationally.  This success is due entirely to the support our project has received from you.

We’re now waiting for Energyshare to request a detailed application for our plans to make lighting-efficiencies in selected local community centres.
