Review of potato party, Sunday 16th October

with one comment

The sun shone as about 80 friends, neighbours, local residents and members of Teign Estuary Transition met to eat the first crop of potatoes, grown within Eastcliff Park’s walled garden.

The abundant crop of delicious red-skinned Sarpo potatoes were baked on a huge bonfire; Sian Avon, Senior Countryside Ranger for Teignbridge District Council, supported the event throughout the day and provided wood for burning.

The main event started at 3pm, with David Haines conducting Teignmouth Community Choir singing environmental-themed songs to celebrate the garden and its harvest, before everyone enjoyed the feast of free potatoes and salads, also grown in the garden. Surplus uncooked potatoes were sold – money raised will help to buy seeds to grow in the garden next year.

We are grateful to the local press for publicising this event so effectively. It was promoted beforehand in Herald Express and Teignmouth Post. The Teignmouth Post also printed a two-page picture-feature reviewing the day (see p 20/21, Friday 21st October 2011).

leave a comment »

Friends, neighbours and local residents are invited to join Teign Estuary Transition in sharing their first crop of potatoes, which will be baked by bonfire within Eastcliff Park’s Walled Garden on Sunday 16th October.

Potatoes will be dug up and the bonfire prepared between 11am – 1pm. The main event starts at 3pm, with Teignmouth Community Choir singing to celebrate the harvest.

There is also a Compost Competition at 4pm, where you can bring along a sample of your own compost for analysis and feedback.

Entry to the event is free, though donations are welcome, and you can buy potatoes and home-made chutney to provide funds for next year’s crop.

Click below to see our poster for the event with full details.

Permaculture course cancelled

leave a comment »

Sadly, due to the bad weather conditions, we’ve decided to cancel the Bite-sized Permaculture course due to take place in the Walled Garden today (Sunday 12th June).

The good news is that we’ve already arranged a replacement date which is Sunday 10th July. We’ll make further details available closer to the day.

Sunday 12 June 10am – 1pm: bite-sized permaculture in the Walled Garden

leave a comment »

Join us for an introduction to permaculture gardening in Eastcliff’s walled garden:

Why? The dry weather is predicted to continue and we will need to find ways to accommodate this within our gardening.  This event will give us some useful ideas.

What’s involved?  Jane from HogCo will give a short presentation of how a few of the principles of permaculture can be applied within a horticultural setting.  It will be followed by practical application within our walled garden.

What to bring?  Sun hat and water, plus sturdy shoes and gardening gloves.  A trowel would be useful, also a watering can.

And what should I carry in my other hand?  If you have some card, grass cuttings, spoiled straw, and a few newspapers that you could bring along, it would be good.

Cost?  There is a small charge of £2 per person to cover this event including refreshment (drink and cake). No need to book – please just turn up!

Further details? Call Fran on 770318.

Sunday 10th April, 11am: learn how to make compost

with one comment

We are arranging a session on making compost in the Walled Garden, Eastcliff Park. HogCO will lead the session starting at 11.00 am. It would be useful if we could bring a sack of something – garden weeds, kitchen scraps, animal manure, autumn leaves, buy a bale of straw, waste veg. from the local fruit and veg shop. Just make sure all the different types of materials are kept separate, please. The Garden is a lovely sun trap, so you may wish to bring sun-screen lotion and water to drink.

For more details about Devon-based HogCO (Home Grown – Community Owned) see: http://www.hogco-devonrcc.org.uk/

It will be an interesting and educational morning.  See you there!
